Rumor: Dragon Quest VII Remake Revealed for 2026 Release

According to the website MP1st, Square Enix is developing a remake of Dragon Quest VII.

This information comes from internal documents the site allegedly accessed, which outline multiple future projects tied to the company’s major franchises—all scheduled for this fiscal year or early next year.

The keyword here is “remake”—internally classified as such. This distinction is crucial, since Square Enix has referred to other upgraded Dragon Quest titles (like Dragon Quest III and the upcoming I-II) as HD Remake. The explicit use of “remake” strongly suggests a more ambitious reimagining of Dragon Quest VII beyond a simple graphical upgrade.

Square Enix revisiting more remakes from the Dragon Quest series is unsurprising, having publicly stated that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake exceeded sales expectations (a rarity for Square Enix). By December, the title had sold over 2 million units.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past originally launched for PlayStation in Japan in 2000, arriving on Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Western releases followed in 2001 and 2016 respectively.
