Turtle Rock Studios released Evolve, a multiplayer game, in 2015 that generated significant excitement at launch. However, this enthusiasm quickly faded due to negative player feedback, which criticized the game’s repetitive design and excessive reliance on DLCs. This led to a sharp decline in the player base, marking the beginning of its end and culminating in server shutdowns in 2018.

According to the website of TJ Frame, a former artist at Turtle Rock Studios, development of Evolve 2 began shortly after the first game’s release. However, after several months in pre-production, the project was canceled when Turtle Rock shifted focus to other concepts—one of which ultimately became Back 4 Blood.

The illustrations showcase city designs and various ships that, per the artist, belonged to one of the game’s envisioned locations—a massive asteroid mining station tentatively named “Akhenaton.” The sequel also planned to revisit Shear, the planet from the original game, featuring more sequential missions. The city concept art reveals new environments the team aimed to introduce on this planet.
