Cory Barlog, director of God of War II and God of War (2018), shared some vague details about what Santa Monica Studio’s team is currently working on.
“I’d like to share a bit about our new project,” wrote Barlog on Facebook (via Game Informer). “I’m incredibly proud of what the Santa Monica Studio team has been accomplishing. It’s a technically ambitious project, something not easy to achieve. This is a new intellectual property we’ve been working on for years, and if all goes well, we plan to show it to you later this year. I couldn’t be more excited.” Barlog concluded the post with two heart emojis.
Barlog’s post doesn’t specify whether this is Sony Santa Monica’s next project or its only project, though all signs point toward it being so.
Regarding God of War, developer Bluepoint Games (best known for their remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls) was working on an online service game tied to the franchise. This game was publicly canceled, according to Sony’s statement to Bloomberg. There are rumors of a Metroidvania game, but it remains just speculation so far.
