Tomb Raider Remaster: AI Voices Used For Dialogue?
Tomb Raider Remaster AI Voices Allegedly Used For New Dialogue Without Consent

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, released in February this year, received a second version update a few days ago. The patch notes highlight that a new batch of “restorations” had been made to The Angel of Darkness, which includes new dialogues as well as fixes for some that had volume inconsistencies in the original recording.

The restoration, however, allegedly uses generative AI tools to replicate the actresses’ voices in different languages to produce new content. Some fans detected differences in the performance and contacted the actresses directly, such as Brazilian performer Lene Bastos, who had voiced the protagonist for the localized version of the game originally released in 2003.

User reports indicate Saber Interactive and Aspyr Media may have used AI tools to replicate voices in different language dubs, not limited to Brazilian Portuguese but also including French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese, without the consent of respective actresses.

Paul Douglas, a member of the original 1996 Tomb Raider development team, condemned this use of AI but, as of now, there has been no official statement from the remaster studios regarding the matter.

GenAI used in this way:

Not cool.
Not classy.
