In developing its past titles, CD Projekt RED prioritized the PC. Consoles, therefore, received adapted, ported versions. Now, with The Witcher 4, things will shift a bit.
In the past, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had its resolution scaled down before launch, while the issues with Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 need no introduction. With The Witcher 4, the studio is primarily focused on developing the game for PS5.
“We always worked with PC, we push [the technology] and then try to scale down,” said CD Projekt RED’s Head of Programming, Charles Tremblay, speaking to Digital Foundry (via Push Square). “This time we want to prioritize console development.”
Tremblay went on to say that for the final product, the studio is targeting 60 fps, as seen in the recent game demo running on Unreal Engine 5. While this is not necessarily representative of the product the studio will release, it seems to be a close representation of what the developer has in mind.
Ultimately, CD Projekt RED believes 60 fps is a realistic target for its next title on the base PS5, though it notes that achieving the same ambition on the lower-spec Xbox Series S will be “far more ambitious”.
