PlayStation has no plans to offer first-party games to PS Plus subscribers at launch.
In a recent interview with Stephen Totilo of Game File (via Insider Gaming), PlayStation’s global services vice president Nick Maguire discussed the company’s strategy for the service.
For Sony, the current policy of waiting at least one year to add PlayStation first-party games to PS Plus is proving effective. “We’ve remained true to our strategy in all regards, where we are not seeking to launch games on day one,” Maguire told Totilo.
Instead of first-party titles, PlayStation prefers to focus its subscriber offerings on indie and third-party games. Maguire states that using these titles to “complement” the current approach to PlayStation’s first-party catalog is “working really well across the platform.”
This number could even jump to more than five games if PlayStation identifies worthwhile additions. “If there were six or seven great opportunities, we’d take those as well,” Maguire said.
When asked whether day-one releases of multiple first-party games like Concord could have helped sustain them in the market, Maguire declined to address the question. Instead, according to Totilo, Maguire stated that PS Plus “has proven to be a great way to introduce new players to franchises.”
