Hideo Kojima says he wants to be the first developer to make a game in space and that he wants to put himself in a “Tom Cruise” situation, risking his own life.
Speaking at the Sydney Film Festival (via VGC), Kojima said he doesn’t just want to go to space as part of the growing space tourism industry, but rather to spend an extended period in orbit.
“I want to train properly, learn to dock, go to the International Space Station and stay there for a few months,” he said. “I’m not a scientist, but I could probably make games in space. I want to be the first. There are many astronauts over 60, so I think it’s possible.”
Kojima then joked that if he could develop a game in space, he’d feel less annoyed by his back pain. He continued saying he’d like to put himself in a dangerous situation, like Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise, to feel alive. “It’s the Tom Cruise disease,” he told the audience. “Tom Cruise discovers his value when he lives with his life on the line.”
Birthday Scene in Death Stranding 2
Kojima also revealed that the birthday scene in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was filmed on Elle Fanning’s birthday (via X).
He said they did two takes – one real and another where Kojima surprises Elle with a cake after the scene. The surprise take is what they used in the game, meaning Kojima actually showed up with a cake for Elle after filming.
