In June 2023, publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive announced John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. Since then, we haven’t had any updates on the game.
A leak (via Insider Gaming) ended up revealing some images and details about the title.
According to the leak, Saber Interactive’s upcoming title resembles games like Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood, but has two main differences.
The leak reveals the first major change is that missions are now tied to specific areas rather than simply moving from point A to point B. The second significant change involves vehicle traversal across maps. It’s highlighted that in-game vehicles play a crucial role, featuring fuel gauges that deplete unless players find gasoline. Vehicles can also be equipped with weapons for defense and various upgrades, including a louder horn to attract more zombies.
Regarding replayability, the leaker states it’s similar to other PvE co-op games where you can select different difficulties while leveling up various characters and weapons. The leak also indicates the game will feature a central hub or operations base where players can upgrade equipment, test weapons, and more.
See below for the title’s official description (via Epic Games Store):
In the near future, an experimental attempt to harness power from Earth’s core ends in terrible disaster: the awakening of the Sludge God, a supernatural abomination that begins terraforming the area, turning land into toxic slime and the living into undead monsters. However, the genius behind the experiment has a plan to fix everything. He just needs a team of competent, highly-trained mercenaries to do the job… Unfortunately, that team charged too much, so he hired…
