Sony’s CFO stated they expect Marathon to launch by the end of March 2026.
During a Q&A session following the release of the company’s latest financial results, Sony executives were questioned about Marathon‘s status following its official delay and whether this factored into Sony’s forecast for the current fiscal year (via VGC). The questioner also requested an update on Bungie’s management and what Sony would do in a worst-case scenario if Marathon was canceled.
Sony CFO Lin Tao responded by saying Marathon is expected to launch within the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. “First, regarding Marathon, since we included it in our forecast, we are expecting the launch to occur within the fiscal year,” she stated (via interpreter). “However, that said, this is not a commitment. No official announcement has been made yet.”
She added: “We are making adjustments to development and, based on the progress, believe we can communicate in autumn when we’ll launch [Marathon], whether by Bungie or PlayStation.”
Regarding Bungie, Tao reiterated Sony’s decision to take greater control over the studio’s management, aiming for full integration into PlayStation Studios. “About Bungie’s governance, at the time of acquisition, we offered a highly independent environment—that was one way of thinking,” Tao explained. “However, afterward, we underwent structural reform as announced last year, so that independence is lightening, and Bungie is taking on a role becoming more part of PlayStation Studios. Integration is ongoing. Long-term, if you can view this as an ongoing process, the direction [for Bungie] is to become part of PlayStation Studios.”
On Marathon‘s potential cancellation, Tao said this isn’t currently expected, stating: “We are addressing the issues, so we believe this launch will happen. Should the release be canceled, we’d need to reassess, but this isn’t expected currently.”
