Mark Cerny Says He Is “Nearing the End” of His Career, but That Does Not Confirm a PS6 Role

Mark Cerny told Game File that he is nearing the end of his career, while stressing that he is not finished yet. The statement has prompted speculation about a possible PS6, but neither Sony nor Cerny has confirmed the console or his involvement in it.

Mark Cerny told Game File that he is “nearing the end” of his career, adding that he is “not done yet.” The comment has since fueled speculation that a possible PlayStation 6 could be the final Sony console to carry his work as lead architect, but that conclusion is not confirmed.

“I’m nearing the end of my career,” Cerny said in an email interview with Game File. “I’m not done yet, but paying it forward—in the best way possible—is very much on my mind these days.”

The interview was connected to the launch of the Nova Games Foundation, an independent philanthropic initiative unrelated to PlayStation. The program is intended to provide $100,000 grants to 20 young game designers each year, with some fellows eligible for up to $500,000 in additional funding.

Nothing in the reported exchange announces Cerny’s retirement, names a successor or identifies a future hardware project. It also does not confirm the existence, timing or architecture of a PlayStation 6.

Why the PS6 speculation emerged

The link to a potential PS6 comes from a Push Square report, which argues that Cerny could still lead the reveal of a future PlayStation console, but that it might be his last system architecture for Sony. That is an editorial projection based on his career comment and an unconfirmed future hardware window—not a statement that Cerny has been selected to design the PS6.

Reports from GamesRadar and PSU have also repeated the Game File account. Those articles establish that the comment circulated widely, but they do not provide official confirmation of a new PlayStation console or Cerny’s participation in one.

Cerny’s history makes the speculation understandable. The official PlayStation.Blog identified him as the PS4 system architect in 2013. In 2020, PlayStation described him as the lead system architect for PS5 during its technical presentation, and later identified him as the lead architect of PS5 Pro.

That documented role across multiple generations explains why a change in Cerny’s professional focus would matter to PlayStation hardware watchers. It does not, however, turn his work on PS4, PS5 and PS5 Pro into evidence that he will design a successor.

For now, the verified news is narrower: Cerny says he is approaching the end of his career while continuing to work, and he is directing attention toward supporting the next generation of game developers through Nova. The PS6 connection remains a possibility raised by secondary reporting, not a confirmed Sony plan or retirement announcement.
