Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks PS2's Historic Japan Sales Record

The Nintendo Switch 2 broke the PS2’s sales record during its first month in Japan.

According to data provided by Famitsu (via VGC), the console reportedly sold at least 1.5 million units in Japan during its first month. It’s worth pointing out that this doesn’t include units sold by Nintendo itself; therefore, the number is likely much higher.

Famitsu collects data from over 3,000 Japanese retail stores. According to this data, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold 1,538,260 units in the first month, the highest launch sales for any console in Japan since the publication began recording data in 1996.

The Game Boy Advance held the record for Nintendo consoles, selling 1,367,433 units in its first month, followed by the Nintendo DS with 1,269,846.

The Switch 2’s sales figures indicate it’s selling at least three times faster than the original Switch did in Japan, which sold 556,633 units over the same period. The best first-month sales performance for a non-Nintendo console (and technically not exclusively handheld) was 1,134,862 units, a figure the PS2 achieved in 2000.
