Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million units in worldwide sales on its first day of release. The publisher also said that cumulative sales across the Onimusha series have now exceeded 10 million units.
The result comes from the first new Onimusha game in more than 20 years. Way of the Sword is a swordplay action game starring Miyamoto Musashi and set in Edo-era Kyoto, with a PS5 release and PS5 Pro enhancements.
Capcom’s announcement does not break the figure down by platform, territory or sales channel. It is therefore not possible to determine how much of the 1 million units came from PS5, nor whether the reported worldwide sales combine physical sales, digital purchases, shipments or another measure defined by the company.
The number also needs historical context. Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remains the series’ official best-selling entry, with 2.1 million copies sold as of September 30, 2024. Way of the Sword’s first-day figure is roughly half that record, so the announcement does not support claims that the new game is already close to overtaking it.
Capcom credited several pre-release marketing efforts, including multiple demos and hands-on events, as part of the activity surrounding the launch. The publisher has not announced a timetable for the next comparable update.
