Push Square Says Dragon Quest Monsters Could Be a Cosy PS5 Alternative This December

A Push Square preview describes Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World as a Pokémon-like, cosy monster RPG, while official pages confirm its PS5 release and monster-synthesis systems. Its December date still varies by source and region.

Push Square’s preview describes Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World as a potentially cosy alternative for PS5 players facing a busy end-of-year release schedule. The comparison to Pokémon and the “cosy” characterization belong to Push Square’s editorial impressions, rather than official Square Enix positioning.

The publication says it spent roughly an hour with the game’s opening moments at a London event. Its preview frames the experience as a fusion of traditional Dragon Quest role-playing elements and monster collecting, with players recruiting creatures, training them and building a party.

That broad description is supported by the official PlayStation page, which says players will befriend monsters from the Dragon Quest series, raise them, synthesize new creatures and send them into battles. The page also identifies Bianca and Nera as the protagonists and lists optional online play for up to four players with PlayStation Plus.

The synthesis system is also highlighted in the official “Monster Wrangler Trailer”, which shows recruiting monsters, combining them into new creatures and taking part in the Wrangler’s Gauntlet. Those systems give the game a clear monster-RPG identity, while the more relaxed tone remains an impression specific to Push Square’s preview.

Square Enix Asia lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows. Its announcement gives PS5 and the other console versions a worldwide release date of December 3, 2026, with the Steam version scheduled for December 4.

There is a regional and source-level wrinkle around that date. The US PlayStation page displays December 2, 2026, while Square Enix’s North American press page still lists the release date as TBA. The December 3 date is therefore the clearest announcement from Square Enix Asia, but final availability may depend on region and platform.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World could occupy an appealingly different space in the PS5 calendar if Push Square’s early impression holds up: a monster-focused RPG built around collecting, training and synthesis rather than another large-scale action release. How substantial its combat, exploration and online features will be on PS5 is not yet clear from the public information available.
