The setting is the Sengoku period.

Japan is fractured into independent nations locked in relentless warfare. At its heart lies Ashina—a land of hallowed ground and ancient secrets. Twenty years after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina reclaimed the region in a bloody coup, a new threat emerges from within: The Interior Ministry. Desperate to save his homeland, Isshin’s grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden powers. All hope rests with an abducted child—The Divine Heir—and his silent protector: a loyal shinobi known only as Sekiro.

This is the story of a lord and his retainer—and their quest to restore balance to a nation teetering on the brink of oblivion.
