Ubisoft CEO Blames Star Wars Brand for Outlaws Sales Underperformance

During a recent shareholders’ meeting, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot faced questions regarding the development and eventual release of Star Wars Outlaws.

It’s no secret that the game underperformed commercial expectations, with September rumors suggesting Star Wars Outlaws sold just 1 million copies in its first month.

At the shareholder meeting (via Insider Gaming), Yves Guillemot addressed inquiries about Star Wars Outlaws. While specific sales targets weren’t clarified, Ubisoft fell significantly short of meeting them regardless.

Explaining Star Wars Outlaws‘ downturn, Guillemot first criticized the “Star Wars” brand itself, accusing it of facing troubles, before addressing the game’s technical performance:

For Star Wars Outlaws, we did not meet our sales targets. The game suffered from several problems. First, it suffered from being released at a time when the brand, the brand it belonged to, was in troubled waters. And the game had some issues that still needed refinement, which were polished and fixed in the first weeks, but that impacted the sales volume.

We’ve significantly improved the game through troubleshooting and debugging, and when it launches on the next generation of consoles, like the Switch 2, it will be the new version of the game.

Star Wars Outlaws launched in August 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
